20 years ago, there was only one source of Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage with overhead parallel bars for the therapist’s support. Ruthie Piper Hardee developed this style out of her own needs and for the comfort of her clients.
Now, there are many imitators. It’s said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”, but unfortunately nowadays, that means that the public is confused. Because the term “ashiatsu” is not able to be trademarked (never mind that Hardee was the first to bring it to public consciousness in the 1990s in the US), a number of people have taken that to their advantage while teaching their own form of barefoot massage.
Some of them learned on YouTube (yes, and were given permission to teach with CEUs), others have been our students and others have worked with us for some time. Others still perhaps have seen a few videos and looked at photos and made up their own gig.
Remember, if you see prices for Ashiatsu classes that are well below the industry norm for CE prices, there may be a good reason for that. My Kia cost a heck of a lot less than my mom’s Lexus. There’s a reason for that.
